Winter Outfits for Men in India: 8 Looks Sorted by How Cold It Actually Gets
Share
Here's the thing nobody tells you about winter outfits for men in India: most of our "winter" isn't winter. It's a 26°C afternoon in Mumbai, a 17°C evening in Bengaluru, a foggy 8°C morning in Delhi, and one week in Manali where you suddenly own nothing warm enough. Same country, five different weathers, and most style guides hand you a wool overcoat and wish you luck.
So we sorted this one by the only thing that actually matters: how cold it is where you're standing. Eight outfits, each matched to a temperature range, built from pieces you probably already own (a hoodie, a sweatshirt, joggers, a decent tee) plus a couple of ideas for when you want people to look twice.
Quick answer: For most Indian cities, men's winter outfits come down to layering cotton, not buying heavy wool. Above 20°C, a heavier tee with an open overshirt is enough. Between 12°C and 20°C, a cotton fleece sweatshirt or hoodie with jeans or joggers does the job. Below 12°C, add a jacket on top. Below 5°C, start with a thermal base layer.
First, Find Your Temperature (This Changes Everything)
We've all done it. Pulled out the thickest thing we own on the first slightly cold morning, then spent the afternoon sweating through it in an auto. The fix is boring but it works: check the actual number before you get dressed, then build up from there.
| Temperature | Where you'll feel it | What to wear |
|---|---|---|
| 20°C to 26°C | Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Goa | Heavy tee, open overshirt |
| 15°C to 20°C | Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad evenings | Sweatshirt, jeans or chinos |
| 10°C to 15°C | Delhi, Jaipur, Bhopal, Ahmedabad nights | Hoodie, joggers or jeans |
| 5°C to 10°C | Delhi, Lucknow, Chandigarh in January | Tee, hoodie, jacket on top |
| Below 5°C | Manali, Shimla, Mussoorie trips | Thermal, tee, hoodie, puffer |
Rough ranges, obviously. A Delhi December can swing from 8°C at 7am to 22°C by lunch, which is exactly why layers beat one big jacket every time.
8 Winter Outfits for Men, From "Barely Cold" to "Mountain Cold"
1. The Coastal "Winter": Oversized Tee + Open Overshirt (20°C to 26°C)
If you live by the sea, winter is mostly a mood. You don't need a sweatshirt. You need something that looks a little more put-together than summer.
Start with a heavier oversized tee in black, white or olive. Throw a flannel or denim overshirt over it, unbuttoned, sleeves rolled once. Straight jeans, white sneakers. When the sea breeze kicks in after sunset, button the overshirt. That's your entire winter wardrobe sorted.
A thicker tee matters here. Our Black Oversized T-shirt (₹799) is 240 GSM, which means it holds its shape under an overshirt instead of collapsing into it. If you're new to the boxy fit, our oversized t-shirt styling guide covers the proportions.
2. The Sweatshirt + Chinos Combo (15°C to 20°C)
This is the outfit for the Bengaluru evening where it's too cold for a tee but a hoodie feels like you've given up. A plain crewneck sweatshirt reads as effort without looking like effort.
Go for a solid colour (olive, navy, grey melange, maroon), pair it with beige or charcoal chinos, and finish with loafers or clean sneakers. It works for college, a casual office, or a first date where you want to look relaxed but not lazy.
The Olive Green Sweatshirt (₹1,399) is an easy start. Olive goes with beige, black, denim, and basically everything else in a man's wardrobe.
3. The Weekend Uniform: Hoodie + Joggers (12°C to 18°C)
Matching or near-matching hoodie and joggers is the one outfit every guy secretly lives in from November to February. The trick to making it look intentional instead of "just woke up" is fit and colour.
- Tonal works best. Grey on grey, black on black, or navy hoodie with black joggers.
- Cuffed joggers, always. The ankle cuff is what separates a jogger from a pyjama.
- Clean shoes. White sneakers make the whole thing look styled. Slides make it look like you're going to the dhaba. (Sometimes that's fine.)
A Grey Melange Hoodie (₹1,499) with a Grey Jogger (₹899) comes to ₹2,398 for the full look. Not bad for the outfit you'll wear four days a week.
4. The Fandom Hoodie + Black Jeans (12°C to 18°C)
Some winter outfits keep you warm. Others start conversations. A band or show hoodie does both, which is why it's the piece that gets the most "where's that from?" questions at a December concert or a college fest.
Keep everything else quiet so the hoodie does the talking: black slim jeans, black or white sneakers, no other graphics. If Hybrid Theory still lives somewhere in your playlist, the LP Emblem Hoodie (₹1,999) wears that era without shouting about it. Browse more in our music hoodies.
Heads-up: printed hoodies are made to order, so give them 8 to 10 days before they ship.
5. Hoodie Under a Denim or Bomber Jacket (8°C to 14°C)
The most useful layering trick for North Indian winters. A hoodie under a jacket gives you two layers of warmth plus a hood that sits outside the collar, which looks deliberate and keeps your neck warm on a bike.
Rules that keep it from looking bulky:
- The jacket should be one size roomier than your usual, or a regular fit at least. Skinny jackets over hoodies never work.
- Pull the hood out and let it lie flat over the collar.
- Pick a hoodie colour that contrasts with the jacket: grey under denim, black under olive, maroon under black.
When the sun comes out at noon, the jacket comes off and you're still wearing a complete outfit.
6. Sweatshirt Over a Collared Shirt (14°C to 20°C)
For offices that are "casual but not that casual." Wear a plain crewneck sweatshirt over a white or light blue Oxford shirt, with the collar and an inch of cuff peeking out. Dark chinos or tailored trousers, brown shoes.
It's the warmest outfit that still survives a client call. A Black Sweatshirt (₹1,399) over a white collar is about as classic as it gets.
7. Graphic Sweatshirt + Cargos (12°C to 18°C)
If outfit 6 is for the office, this is for everything after. A printed sweatshirt with loose cargo pants and chunky sneakers is the relaxed, slightly streetwear look that works for movie nights, house parties, and long drives.
Pick cargos in olive, black or khaki and let the sweatshirt bring the colour. Fans of a certain upside-down world have been wearing the Alphabet Wall Sweatshirt (₹1,799) exactly like this. More in our TV show sweatshirts.
8. The Mountain Stack: Thermal + Tee + Hoodie + Puffer (Below 5°C)
For the Manali trip, the Shimla weekend, or that one wedding in Dehradun. Here's the order, from skin outwards:
- Thermal base layer. Traps body heat. Non-negotiable below 5°C.
- Cotton tee. Something you can be seen in when you take the rest off indoors.
- Hoodie or sweatshirt. Your insulating middle layer.
- Puffer or windproof jacket. Blocks wind, which is what actually makes mountain cold feel brutal.
Add a beanie, wool socks and joggers or thick jeans. Inside the café you strip down to the hoodie and still look like you meant to wear it.
How to Layer Without Looking Like a Sleeping Bag
Layering goes wrong in three ways: too many thick layers, every layer the same length, and everything in one colour family with no contrast. Fix those and you're most of the way there.
- Thin to thick. The lightest layer goes closest to your body, the heaviest goes outside.
- Stagger lengths. Tee hem slightly longer than the hoodie hem, jacket shorter or longer than both. Same length everywhere looks like one big block.
- Two colours, one accent. Black and grey with a maroon hoodie. Navy and beige with an olive jacket. Simple palettes look expensive.
- Cotton over polyester for the middle layer. Indian winter days warm up fast, and cotton breathes when they do. Our hoodies and sweatshirts are 100% bio-washed cotton fleece for exactly that reason.

Winter Colours That Actually Work for Men
Winter is the one season where darker, earthier colours look better than in summer. Our short list:
- Olive: pairs with beige, black and denim. The easiest "not black" colour.
- Maroon: warm, rich, looks good on most Indian skin tones.
- Grey melange: the most forgiving base layer you can own.
- Navy: smarter than black, works for office and weekend.
- Black: obviously. Just add one lighter piece so it doesn't flatten in photos.
A Winter Wardrobe Under ₹5,000
If you're starting from zero, four pieces cover outfits 2, 3, 5 and 6 on this list:
| Piece | Why | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Grey Melange Hoodie | Under jackets, with joggers, on its own | ₹1,499 |
| Black Sweatshirt | Office layer, over collared shirts | ₹1,399 |
| Black Jogger | Goes with every top on this list | ₹899 |
| Black Oversized T-shirt | Base layer now, solo outfit in March | ₹799 |
| Total | ₹4,596 |
Check the size chart before ordering. If you plan to layer a hoodie under a jacket, stay true to size on the hoodie and size up on the jacket, not the other way round.
FAQs
What should men wear in winter in India?
Most Indian cities need layers rather than heavy coats. Above 20°C, a heavier tee with an open overshirt is enough. Between 12°C and 20°C, wear a cotton fleece sweatshirt or hoodie with jeans, chinos or joggers. Below 12°C, add a jacket. Below 5°C, start with a thermal base layer.
Is a hoodie or a sweatshirt better for Indian winters?
Both work in the same temperature range if they're the same fabric. A hoodie is better for bike rides, windy evenings and travel because the hood covers your neck and head. A sweatshirt looks cleaner over collared shirts and under blazers, so it's better for offices.
How do I layer clothes in winter without looking bulky?
Go from thin to thick, stagger the lengths of each layer, and keep the colour palette to two main colours plus one accent. Make sure your outer jacket has enough room for the hoodie or sweatshirt underneath.
Can I wear an oversized t-shirt in winter?
Yes. A heavier oversized tee works on its own in coastal winters around 20°C to 26°C, under an open overshirt, or as a base layer under a hoodie in colder cities.
Which colours look best in men's winter outfits?
Olive, maroon, navy, grey melange and black are the easiest winter colours. They pair well with each other and with denim, beige and khaki.
Are joggers okay to wear outside the gym?
Yes, as long as they're cuffed at the ankle, fit well and are paired with a clean hoodie or sweatshirt and good sneakers. Tonal outfits like grey hoodie with grey joggers look the most intentional.
Winter dressing in India isn't about owning the warmest jacket. It's about having three or four pieces that stack well, so you can add one when the fog rolls in and lose one by lunch.
