Secret Santa Gifts Under ₹500: 15 Ideas for the Colleague You Barely Know (and the Friend You Know Too Well)
You unfold the chit. It's a name you've seen in exactly three email threads and one awkward lift ride. The budget is ₹500. The exchange is in two weeks. And somewhere in your head, a voice says: just get a scented candle.
Don't. Good Secret Santa gifts under ₹500 don't need a bigger budget. They need one small clue about the person and a gift that proves you noticed it. This guide splits 15 ideas by who you drew: the colleague you barely know, the friend you know far too well, and the total mystery. Every pick is under ₹500, and there's an order-by date at the end so your gift doesn't show up on December 26.
Quick answer: the best Secret Santa gifts under ₹500 are small, personal and useful: a custom name badge (₹149), a fandom coaster (₹129), a mousepad or notebook from their favourite show (₹399), a band poster (₹249) or a mug with an inside joke (₹499). Pick their show or band, and the gift does the talking. Browse everything in one place in our Secret Santa Gifts Under ₹500 collection.
Why most Secret Santa gifts under ₹500 end up in a drawer
Search for Secret Santa gift ideas and you'll get the same list every year: candles, chocolates, desk plants, a power bank. Nothing wrong with any of them. The problem is that they're for anyone, and your recipient can tell.
The gifts people actually keep at ₹500 share three traits:
- They're specific. A Dunder Mifflin mousepad says "I know you quote The Office in stand-ups." A generic mousepad says "I had ten minutes."
- They get used daily. Desks, walls, bags and coffee are where small gifts live long lives.
- They're safe to open in public. Office exchanges happen in front of everyone. Funny is good. Embarrassing is not.
How to figure out what someone likes (when you barely know them)
You have more clues than you think. Spend five minutes being a polite detective:
- Check their laptop lid and bag. Stickers and badges are fandom confessions.
- Look at their Slack or WhatsApp display picture. Pets, bands and cartoon avatars all count.
- Listen in meetings. Someone who says "cool cool cool, no doubt" has told you everything.
- Ask a teammate one casual question: "What's she been watching lately?" Nobody suspects the person asking about TV.
Found one clue? That's enough. Here's where to spend your ₹500.
Secret Santa gifts for the colleague you barely know
The rule here is useful first, funny second. Desk gifts are the safest bet because everyone has a desk and nobody has enough on it that feels like theirs.
1. Custom name badge (from ₹149)
Their name, their team name or a tiny in-joke on a metal pin-back badge. It costs less than a coffee run and goes straight onto a lanyard or laptop bag. Ideal when your only clue is their name. Design a custom badge.
2. Custom coaster set (from ₹130)
Print the team logo, the project codename everyone groans about, or "Meeting could have been an email." A two-piece square set is ₹249 and earns a laugh in the room. Make a custom coaster.
3. The Office "Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica." mousepad (₹399)
If they've ever quoted Dwight, this is the one. Cloth top, rubber base, and it sits under their hand eight hours a day. See the mousepad.
4. Brooklyn Nine-Nine "Noice Toit Smort" notebook (₹399)
For the colleague who still takes notes by hand in meetings. Comes ruled or unruled, so pick unruled if they doodle. See the notebook.
5. The Office "World's Best Boss" mug (₹499)
Drew your manager? This is the only acceptable answer. It's a compliment and a joke at the same time, which is exactly the energy of an office Secret Santa. See the mug.
Secret Santa gifts for the friend you know too well
With friends, the danger is the opposite: you know too much, so you overthink it. Skip "useful." Go for "this is so you."
6. Mystery T-shirt (₹399, sizes XS to XL)
A Secret Santa gift that's also a secret to you. Pick Music or TV, choose their size, and we pick the design. You know their size, so this is the one pick reserved for friends. See the Mystery T-shirt.
7. Coldplay "Yellow Scribbles" poster (from ₹249)
For the friend who still talks about the concert. An 8x10 print fits a desk frame or a hostel wall. See the poster.
8. Taylor Swift "Karma Cat" poster (from ₹249)
Swifties will get it in half a second. Everyone else will just see a very confident cat, which also works. See the poster.
9. Friends "You Are My Lobster" mug (₹499)
For the friend you'd call your lobster, out loud, at the exchange. Mild public emotion, maximum Ross energy. See the mug.
10. BTS "I Purple You" notebook (₹399)
An ARMY friend will use this for lyrics, lists or plotting their next concert fund. See the notebook.
Secret Santa gifts when you know nothing at all
No clues, no mutual friends, no time. Use one of these crowd-pleasers. They lean on shows and music most people already love, so the odds are on your side.
11. Stranger Things coaster and badge combo (₹278)
The "Alphabet Wall" coaster (₹129) plus the "11 vs. 1" badge (₹149). Two small things feel like more of a gift than one. See the coaster and the badge.
12. Gilmore Girls "Banter and Coffee" coaster (₹129)
For anyone who has visibly suffered before their first coffee. Pair it with a pack of good filter coffee and you're still under ₹500. See the coaster.
13. Breaking Bad "Let's Cook" mousepad (₹399)
Works for the Breaking Bad fan and for the colleague who brings excellent lunch. Double meaning, zero risk. See the mousepad.
14. Daft Punk "Daft Pug" poster (from ₹249)
Music people get the reference. Dog people get the pug. Most people are at least one of the two. See the poster.
15. Custom mug with their pet's photo (₹499)
Here's the cheat code: a lot of people use their dog or cat as their display picture. Put that photo on a mug. It looks like you know them well. You just paid attention for ten seconds. Make a custom mug.

When to order so it arrives before the exchange
Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday, so most office Secret Santa exchanges will land somewhere between December 18 and December 24. Work backwards from your date:
- Ready-designed badges, coasters, posters, mousepads, notebooks and mugs: up to 5 days to make plus 3 to 6 days to deliver. Order 11 days before your exchange. For a December 21 exchange, that's December 10.
- Custom items and the Mystery T-shirt: these are made from scratch, so give them 16 days. For a December 21 exchange, order by December 5.
One more tip: shipping is free on orders above ₹499. If two people in your team are buying Secret Santa gifts, order together and split it.
A tiny Secret Santa etiquette checklist
- Stick to the budget. Going way over makes the person who stuck to it look bad.
- Keep jokes kind. Roast the show, not the person.
- Avoid sizes for colleagues. Clothing is a friends-only move.
- Add a one-line note. "Saw your Dwight sticker. Bears, beets, Battlestar Galactica." That line is half the gift.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Secret Santa gift under ₹500?
Something small, personal and useful: a fandom coaster (₹129), a custom name badge (₹149), a band or show poster (₹249), a mousepad or notebook (₹399) or a printed mug (₹499). Choose one tied to a show, band or joke they love.
What should I gift a colleague I don't know well for Secret Santa?
Go for a desk gift: a mousepad, notebook, coaster or custom name badge. They're useful, safe to open in front of the team, and easy to personalise with a show or band you've noticed them mention.
Are Secret Santa gifts under ₹1000 better than under ₹500?
Not necessarily. Price isn't what people remember: a well-chosen ₹249 poster beats a forgettable ₹900 gadget. If your group's budget is ₹1000, pair two picks from this list, like a mug and a coaster.
Is a T-shirt a good Secret Santa gift?
For friends, yes, as long as you know their size. For colleagues, skip clothing and choose accessories instead.
When should I order Secret Santa gifts online in India?
Order ready-designed accessories at least 11 days before your exchange and custom items at least 16 days before. For a December 21 exchange, that means December 10 and December 5.
How do I make a cheap Secret Santa gift feel thoughtful?
Make it specific. A gift from their favourite show plus a one-line handwritten note feels more personal than an expensive generic gift.
The best Secret Santa gift is the one that says "I noticed"
Some gifts get a polite "aww, thanks." Others get "wait, how did you know?" At ₹500, the second one is completely within reach. Find one clue, pick their show or band, and let a ₹129 coaster do what a ₹1,500 hamper couldn't.
